Here's a message recieved from Bob Machen, EM1(SS), Palominas (God's Country!) AZ this morning:
"I wanted to let you know that one of your shipmates, Morgan T. "Bud" Melton, TMCS(SS) is in the hospital near his home in Republic, MO. Bud has been having trouble with his blood pressure for sometime now, and recently was diagnosed with a treatable, but incurable kidney disease. He was hospitalized for one day last week, while they ran some tests on him, and was released the following day to return home. To make matters even worse, Bud received a cut while giving a urine specimen, (yeah, I know, it does sound funny, but it's serious) and developed a Staph infection from that cut. The antibiotics needed for the Staph infection are contradictory to the meds necessary for his kidney disease, and adversely affect his blood pressure. Tonight (Thursday) his wife Nancy called to say that Bud had a stroke this morning after breakfast, and was once again in the hospital. She did say that Bud seemed to show very little effects from the stroke. I had just talked to Bud on Wednesday and he sounded very weak and subdued. He said that he had no strength or energy, and that his kidney disease had been draining all of his proteins with his urine. I can't begin to spell the name of the kidney disease, and sure as hell could never pronounce it. It must be the longest word in the English language ... Membraneous...............something or other.
Anyway, bottom line is that I'm asking Bud's Scamp shipmates to join his Corporal (SS346) shipmates in sending your best wishes to Bud. He will really enjoy hearing from all of his former shipmates. It brightens his day more than you could ever imagine. Also, Bud's 70th birthday is on October 30th, so anyone wishing to make jokes about him being old is encouraged to do so. [Lou Minor again: Thanks for this, Bob ...we'll get the word out. Bud and Nancy were at our May reunion in San Diego and seemed to be doing fine. We will pray for his full and rapid recovery!]
