Dear Sarah
Your Sam would not want you to feel badly because even if you weren't there in the room with him, he could feel your love for him. He probably felt gratitude to you and your father for looking after him so well and not wanting to make him suffer any longer.
It sounds like you and Sam have had a really wonderful life together and although this will be a difficult time, there are lots of places where you can find comfort, so you don't have to go through this alone. If you are in our geographical area, please feel free to contact us by telephone or if you think you might like to attend our next meeting on January 28th you would be most welcome. There are lots of good websites that can help - from pet loss chatrooms, to websites with information about pet loss and grief, to special websites where you can create a tribute to Sam for free.
If you are not in the local area and might like to find out if there is a support group near to you, please don't hesitate to email me for additional information.
Sarah, your Sam was a very lucky boy to have had such a loving, caring person like you in his life.
Our thoughts will be with you.
With sincere sympathy,
Terry
