Posted by Halton/Peel Pet Loss Support on 7/31/2006, 1:20 pm A member of our support group sent the following letter to the editor of her local newspaper: "Don't leave your pets in the car on hot days Fido and fluffy feel the heat too Be vigilant of animals in distress. As we all know the summer season is here and as concerned citizens we should be vigilant when it comes to animals and small children left in hot cars while their guardians are shopping at the malls. Also, keep in mind that animals left in the yard need protection from the elements and a constant supply of fresh water. The heat advisories can be very alarming; temperatures into the 30s can reach into the 40s with the humidex. An animal left in a car during a warm day can collapse from heatstroke in just minutes. It's safest to leave your companion animal at home. A vehicle parked in the sun on a 26C day can reach 70C in a matter of minutes. It's important to know what to do in case we see an animal with signs of overheating and distress. Call the authorities immediately, like the local humane society, the police or security at the mall. Time is of the essence. I applaud corporate citizens who take the time to patrol their parking lots and report these incidents to authorities. Always remember it's our duty to intervene on behalf of those who have no voice."
