Dear Jo
While I don't know the circumstances surrounding the loss of your beloved furbaby, it sounds to me that you acted out of love and compassion and did not foolishly just "put him down". That you did this so that he would no longer have to suffer and that is the most unselfish and loving thing that any pet owner can do for their beloved pet. It's also the most painful and it seems that there is always a certain amount of guilt that we feel when we make that decision. Hopefully the article below will give you some comfort, Jo, and maybe if you look at some of the articles on the www.griefhealing.com website you will find some comfort too.
It's unfortunate that your brother had to utter those words to you which just intensified the way you were feeling. YOU know in your heart that it was time for your sweet angel to go and although its difficult, try not to listen to things that people say - especially if they don't understand the bond between you and your little boy OR if they have never had to make this most difficult decision of all.
Jo, you did not "replace" your little boy with this little girl. He will forever have his own space in your heart and you did not try to replace him when you opened your heart and home to this new little girl. It is always difficult learning to love again but I hope with time, this little girl who you brought into your life, will win her own place in your heart. It is so wonderful that you wanted to let her know what it was like to have a family, a home and love and I hope that the two of you will have many wonderful times together.
I know when my cat Smokey died and we got another cat shortly after, I was worried that I would never be able to love the new kitty the way I had loved Smokey. I was angry at myself for taking her in because I felt she was going to be cheated of real love. With time, however, I fell in love with her, Jo, and now she has her own spot in my heart. Smokey has his own spot. And I think Smokey would be pretty happy to know that another little kitty was going to know the kind of love, if not exactly the same, that he did. I hope this happens for you too.

Thoughts are with you, Jo.
