Hi Vicki
There is a book (available at amazon.ca and, I believe, chapters.ca) called "How to ROAR: Pet Loss Grief Recovery" by Robin Jean Brown. It is a "workbook" type of book as well as being very informative about loss and the emotions that are felt with it.
There is also a section "When a Child's Pet Dies" that gives suggestions on how to help and keeping in mind the age of your child. It suggests that children who are older than 2 and younger than 7 will not fully understand the permanence of death, and it suggests that you have to be honest with them and encourage them to ask questions and talk about the pet. If you can get a chance to have a look at this book - even if you go to chapters and check out section 16 - it maybe helpful. We do have the book in our resource library too if you are in the area and want to borrow it.
Please keep posting, Vicki, to let us know how you are all doing. We do care and we do understand.
Sending a hug to all of you
Terry
