Hi Elizabeth,
My heart goes out to you. Every one of us pet owners feels for you. And wouldn't it be nice if we all lived in a place where money was no object? I too am sorry that you have a vet that is making you feel guilty, instead of supporting any decision you make.
If it helps any, when my dog Maverick was around 11, he was in similar health to your dog. And our vet, bless her, was wonderful. She gave my parents the option of surgery, but was very candid in telling them that due to his age, she didn't feel that Maverick was even going to survive the surgery. She basically said that if they wanted her to operate, she herself wasn't even sure that it would be the right thing to do. So, my parents made the decision to have Mav put to sleep. And for the record, money was no object...my folks would have paid if they thought it would have given Mav any more time. I think they would have sold one of us kids if they thought it would have helped.
So don't let your vet bully you into making a decision that you don't want to make.
You baby had 15 wonderful years, and in my humble opinion, what would the surgery be but stress and discomfort?
Make the decision with your heart, Elizabeth. You won't go wrong that way.
Thoughts are with you.
Laurien
