My dog, Sam, died of cancer in October. He was diagnosed the first week of September. He had a few bad days during that time, where he wasn't feeling well, but he had MANY more great days in between. We got to spoil him rotten, even more so than before he was sick. Everyday we took him somewhere and gave him every treat that we ever refused him when he was younger. I too, did lots of research and made special diets for him.
Initially, I wanted to put him down the day that we received the diagnosis because I didn't want to watch him suffer; my husband refused to do that and now I'm so glad that he did. After the initial shock of losing Sam, I'm now able to take so much comfort in knowing how wonderful we made him feel even though he was sick. Some of the things that we did with him during that time are now my best memories. He passed on absolutely certain of how much we loved him and wanted him to be happy despite the illness.
