SCENE 2 Teaspoon, the wise-but-grizzled station boss checked the schedule. It was Buck Cross’s turn to ride. After Buck took off on his run, Teaspoon headed out to the steam shack to relaxe. Billy Cody, Lou McCloud and Ike McSwain were all the riders left at the bunkhouse. Peeling an apple for a special pie, Emma Shannon sat in her porch rocker. She was as close to a mother as the express riders had even though she was not yet thirty. She looked out for them and helped them learn proper manners. Lounging on the front porch of Emma’s farmhouse, these remaining riders hoped to enjoy a nice day off. “So what are we doing today?” Lou, the only female rider asked. “Nobody’s got plans.” Emma looked alarmed. “I don’t know boys. The last thing I need is for someone to get the lot o’ you riled up in the store like last time. Broken windows are awful expensive.” (That's about half of SCENE 2). Let me know what you think.
You shall now be rewarded!
Russell, Majors and Waddell were the last names of the three owners of the Pony Express. The company headquarters in Missouri supposedly kept records of who was supposed to ride on any particular day from any particular express station.
“There’re always chores to get done.”
“All we ever do is work,” complained Lou to Ike who leaned against a post. “How come we never do anything for fun?” Ike shrugged.
“Work can be fun,” responded Emma. Amidst the riders groans, she persisted, “No, really all you gotta do is try to improve the situation.”
“Speaking of improving situations, I got an idea,” said Billy who was almost out of his teens and preferred to go by his last name. “Why don’t we go into town and see what’s new at the General Store?”
